Understanding Proposition 50

What is Proposition 50?
Proposition 50 is a ballot measure prepared by the California State Legislature for a statewide special election on November 4, 2025. If approved by the voters it would amend the maps for U.S. Congressional Districts until after the 2030 census.
Levels the Playing Field
Prop 50 ensures the 2026 mid-term elections happen without an unfair advantage for Republicans.
Gives VOTERS the Power
Only the People of California have the power to amend the State Constitution to approve emergency Congressional District maps. This is Democracy in Action, not a power grab by Sacramento politicians.
Fair and Proportional
It provides emergency maps ONLY because Republicans moved forward with their power grab. California's proposed maps comply with the Voting Rights Act. Texas' maps violate the right of representation of Black and Latino voters.
Temporary Solution
The Prop 50 maps expire in 2030. Prop 50 preserves California's voter approved award-winning redistricting reforms. The non-partisan California Redistricting Commission will again draw congressional districts after the next census.
Commits to Fair Redistricting Everywhere
Prop 50 reaffirms California's commitment to independent redistricting and calls on all states to commit to fair and impartial maps. Democrats have proposed federal legislation that would ban partisan gerrymandering without any Republican support.
