Democracy Defenders Unite
How do you like to spend your week-ends? Many El Dorado County residents spent Saturday morning, September 27, in preparation for the October 18, "YES on 50" overpass demonstrations. They gathered to make the signs that will send the message, "Vote on November 4".
While other folks were sipping Apple cider and enjoying apple donuts, these folks were gathered to paint signs. Why did they give up their weekend morning to labor? At a time like this, when each day holds a new horrific headline, it helps to be around like-minded people, doing something positive. Folks laugh together, chat, and have a good time while working. Ed states, " …I am here for the camaraderie."
Many residents are worried about the future of our country. They feel that freedoms that we once took for granted, such as Freedom of Speech, are threatened. They note that ICE often has not respected the due process of law. Becca shares, "The world is a scary place right now. I want to join my community to make positive change." Linda adds, " Doing something helps the hurt I feel for the world right now." "I am here for my grandkids and my hope for their future", Peg chimes in.
Indivisible Team Leader, Mary Elliott-Klemm, summarizes, "As individuals none of us have much power or control, but we have our voice and our vote. We are creating signs that will be highly visible over the 10 overpasses in El Dorado County on October 18, No Kings Day. They will be seen by tens of thousands of motorists. With these signs we will shout out loud and clear YES on 50. Reject Kings. Vote on Nov. 4. Giving up a Saturday morning seems a small thing we can do to express our message and help our country."
